WinterPromise Language Arts 3 {WorkBasket Wednesday}

In that past I have been piecing Kayley's Language Arts together.  In fact, following the Well Trained Mind recommendations I used a lot of Susan Wise Bauer's Peace Hill Press products in conjunction with Rod & Staff English.  We liked it.  But, I had wiggle room in my budget and for no reason other than it just "looked fun" we purchased WinterPromises Third Grade Language Arts program called "Tracking Down Good Grammar" featuring Scout the Dog.  So far, we love it and I'm happy to give my readers a walk-through of some of its features!

There are several components to this program.  You need the teachers guidebook, Student Books A-D, Wordly Wise 3000 book 3, and Spellwell B, Bb and answer key.  I purchased the Teachers Guide and Student Books as .pdf downloads, printed them myself and had them spiral bound at Staples.  I really adore buying this way when I can because it lets me write all over the teachers guide and workbooks without remorse (or fear of retaining its resale value) and then print out another if I decide to use them again.  It is also cheaper and saves on shipping AND I get it right away (I dig instant gratification - its a fatal flaw).

The teachers guide is a simple grid format.  You can see from the photo below that this Language Arts program includes Grammar, Creative Writing, Handwriting, Spelling, Vocabulary, and at the very bottom, depending on which Themed Study you are in, Kayley's independent reading assignment.  Since we are doing the Animals Themed Unit, she is reading Classic Starts Black Beauty.

The student workbook pages are fun!
This activity sent Kayley on a capitalization scavenger hunt!

Each page is themed with Scout the Dog
(we really like programs that offer a storyline or theme)

A feature I really like is the creative writing.  Last year, using Writing With Ease, we learned a lot about how to summarize and write a synopsis of a story or paragraph.  Creative writing seems to tickle a different part of the brain and it has been fun to try it out....

The Spelling program WinterPromise schedules is Spellwell B.  You start each week with a pretest, make corrections, and then as the teacher you can add any extra words as you see fit at the bottom.  Now, at the very bottom of the page it says that if you get all your spelling words correct or only miss 1 then you do the "alternate" assignment at the bottom of each page...

Here is an example of Tuesday's homework in the Spellwell book.

For Vocabulary, Wordly Wise 3000 Book 3 is scheduled.
This is a simple straight-forward way to learn some vocabulary.

Now--  What do we really think of Language Arts 3?
We really do like it!  I've had to do some "tweaking" to make it fit us a little better, but not much.  Kayley really likes the Grammar, Creative Writing and Handwriting just as it is....  (FYI: handwriting makes the transition to cursive in Student Book B.)  She really loves how hands on many of the activities are, like scavenger hunts, interviews, writing about books she is reading, etc.

You can see from the sample of week 3 where I have changed spelling to All About Spelling 3 and added in First Language Lessons 2 and Writing With Ease 3.  What WinterPromise Language Arts has done for us is replaced BJU Handwriting, Rod & Staff English, and random Literature in a one-stop-shop format that is fun and engaging.

Ok, so, you might be wondering why I replaced and added a couple of things.  Here is why:

1.  All About Spelling* is just way, way, more awesome than SpellWell...  To start the 1st 3 weeks of Spellwell Kayley aced all the words.  We could follow the "alternate" assignments as listed but they typically involved "writing a paragraph using your alternate spelling words" or something similar.  (pass!)  It also seemed crazy to write in the book when we were only using every 5th page.  Plus, we used AAS Level 1 and 2 and we really LOVE the hands on approach to spelling and felt that it is more rigorous in learning the actual RULES of spelling.  (*affiliate link)

2.  First Language Lessons 2 (and FLL 1 that we completed last year) is all oral and focuses on memorizing grammar definitions, word lists, poetry, and much more.  While I've tried this year to get a little more "Charlotte Mason" I find that I can't just leave the Classical behind and dump some memory work.  We were only midway through book 2 at the end of last year so I want to finish it this year.  There is NO hurry on this book.

3.  Writing With Ease has the child reading through a story and learning how to pull out information to narrate a summary either orally or in writing.  This is SUCH an important skill that Kayley still needs so much work on.  It is just "different" than creative writing.  This is more technical writing.  It is simple to implement and we can do it in less than 10 minutes...

We will definitely be continuing with Winter Promise Language Arts this year.  It has been a nice break from piecing other curricula together and I admit I was getting burned out on constantly trying to create the "rigor" that is Classical.

It's also affordable.  I bought the eBook set for $69.00,  printed them myself and had them spiral bound for less than $10.00.  I purchased Spellwell and Wordly Wise through Christian Book Distribution.

So, there you have it!  I hope this review of LA3 helps someone!  Thanks for stopping by!!

Workbox Wednesday

Kayley's First Grade Workbox:

Bible - Christian Light Education 103 - Lesson 12.  Today Moses has parted the Red Sea.  Kayley is also speaking in Primary next week so we are working on her talk.

Math - BJU Lesson 20, a short review on the first 19 lessons.  We also learned about telling time "30 minutes later" and played the Match - It Addition review game.

Social Studies - CLE 101-6  I broke down and bought Christian Light Ed to cover the downtimes between Unit Studies.  Kayley loves the small workbook format.  The lessons are short.  I will say they require a lot of writing which is not our favorite, so we just pick and choose and I do not make Kayley do all of them.  They are similar workbooks to Lifepac - only they are cheaper.  We are learning about our Community and our Family.

Science - CLE 101-6.  We were learning about wide and narrow, big and tall, etc.  Major review, but at least we are breezing through it pretty quickly and will get to some more challenging stuff later.

Language Arts - BJU.  All lessons are together on lesson 20.  Handwriting - practicing numbers.  Phonics -st word blend.  Reading - "The Elk Hunt" and "The Game" (a BOB book).  We did our service word flash cards.  During breakfast we just finished reading from Read & Learn with Classic Stories.  This morning we read Aesop's Fables.  We haven't been doing the activities...we've just been enjoying the classic children's stories.  We are also going to be reviewing the book Backyard Horses so we will be reading that over the next couple of weeks too.

Spanish - Mi Comida.  We are learning the names of food.

Fine Arts - Our newest picture study is Christmas Eve by Carl Larsson

Maggie's Pre-Preschool WorkBox:

We have discovered The Five Little Monkeys and Maggie wants to read the little board books over and over and over again.  I really recommend Five Llittle Monkey's Jump on the Bed and Five Little Monkeys Sitting in a Tree!  We are also learning a lot by watching Baby Signing Time Vol 1 & 2!  We can now sign "more, all done, milk, please, and cracker!"

Mom's Workbox:  (No reason I should be left out right?)

I am reading several interesting books right now and I watched a couple interesting movies:

I also have 5 reviews coming up!  Time 4 Learning, Before Five in a Row, Polar Star Studies, Character Concepts for Preschoolers and e-mealz!

WorkBox Wednesday

Hi!  Just checking in really, really quick.  We have been having some drama at our house! We have found 2 brown recluse spiders yesterday...big, ugly ones!  One was right here on my computer desk!  One was on Kayleys BED!!!!!  Can you just say major freak-ing-out-ish-ness going on here???  I think I got maybe 2 hours of sleep last night.  Kayley spent the night in bed with us and she was plastered up next to me all night (Can you blame her???)  I woke up a dozen times...I swear...with something crawling on me.  (Or not).

Anyway - we are still doing our schoolwork this morning...the show must go on.  I've called Orkin to come rescue us...and hopefully they come soon!   I have scooted all the girls furniture to the center of the room...and spider-sprayed in the meantime.  Somebody needs to be brave and go out into the garage and into the attic...  I'll admit that I am terrified of spiders!  Just ask my mom, she'll vouch for me!

Keep calm, carry on...  We are school as usual to try to reduce the anxiety.  In our workboxes today we have:

First Grade:

1.  Social Studies/Bible - CLE Light Unit 102.
Today Jacob is returning to Canaan with Rachel and Leah.

2.  MUS-Alpha.  Ch. 3 we are learning our 0 addition facts.  We already know our addition facts through 9 but we are learning the why's of math by using the blocks.  This is going much better now, although Kayley is finding it dull and tedious.  We might still be looking at making a switch.  In Time & Money we are learning the 1/2 hour and 1/2 hour later on both the digital and analog clocks.  We will also be reading a simple level 1 book called "Math Monsters."  A cute way to get math and reading in together!

3.  BJU Press Language Arts.  Kayley read a poem called "Colors."  We are slowly adding to our "caterpillar" reading bug!   We built a little caterpillar head out of a circle...and we are adding a circle to it for every book that Kayley reads.  She has plans of having it be SO huge that Grandma & Papa will be SO impressed when they come for their next visit!  I'm already quite impressed!!

Handwriting is the letter U.
Spelling words are the -and, -ill, & -ot word families and
our service word is "they."

4.  Science.  We will be doing Amanda Bennett's
Download & Go Unit on Handsome Horses!!

5.  We started Spanish this week.  So far we are just focusing on the number 1-5.  It is a subject that Kayley requested and we are dabbling with a simple spanish workbook to see how it goes.  So far she has said that it is "tough."

I am pondering the idea of trying Speekee for Spanish.  I've heard a lot of good things about it.  If you have any thoughts or experiences let me know!  If you are an affiliate let me know that too.  :o)

6.  Computer Time.  We are having fun playing with a program called Time4Learning.  I will be posting a complete review of this product next month so stay tuned!  So far I have to peel Kayley off the computer after she gets started on it...she loves it!

7.  What we are reading now:

8.  Art Appreciation.  We have started examining Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring.

Pre-preschool

1.  Before Five in a Row.   We finished up Jessie Bear and moved on to My Blue Boat

2.  We also finished learning about our eyes and our nose.
Now we will be learning about our mouth.

3. What we are reading:
4.  We've added 2 new cards to our Touch & Feel Picture Cards.  We have added more animals.  Lion, Sheep, Cow and Horse!

Mommy School
1.  I am excited to be continuing in the Bible in 90 Days Challenge!
I have made it to day 38!
MomsToolbox

2.  I have been invited to participate in The Elizabeth Prentiss Study as well...so I have been working on this daily.  It is so fun!
It uses the book Stepping Heavenward by Elizabeth Prentiss and your trusty Bible.
You can buy the kindle edition of the book for only 1.00!

3.  Orkin is coming in 20 minutes!!  Gotta GO!!!

WorkBox Wednesday

Today's Workbox for 1st Grade:

Math - Math-U-See
Chapter 2.  We are counting to 20 and reviewing place values.
We are also working on telling time using a small workbook that I picked up from Target.

Language Arts -
Reviewing color words and the letter H.
Handwriting is writing upper and lowercase H.
Our spelling words for this week are: did, hid, kid, cap, nap, tap, den, hen, pen and the.
We will be reading the first story out of our reader, The Millers

We are also reading Girlhood Journeys - Shannon, a Chinatown Adventure  and Samantha, American Girl Book 5, Samantha Saves the Day.  Unfortunately, I noticed on Amazon the girlhood journeys books are getting hard to find.  They are great, very American Girl-ish.

Social Studies - Bible, we are going to see how Abraham obeys when he is asked to sacrifice Isaac!

Fine Arts - Charlotte Mason Picture Study:
We will review The Mona Lisa by Leonardo Davinci (painted somewhere between 1503-1506) a couple more times before putting her away...

and we are starting a new picture today. Shen Quan's, Pine, Plum & Cranes (painted in 1759).

Science - We are learning how to mount butterflies this week!

Workbox Wednesday

A little late on my posting for WorkBox Wednesday but here it is!

In Language Arts we are doing a lot of reviewing.  T and I.  Spelling words are -it, -in, -en family.  Memory words are I and here.  Kayley read 2 Bob Books vol 3.

In Bible 1 Abraham and Sarah rejoiced at the birth of Isaac.

We also started our Charlotte Mason picture study.  We are learning a bit about Leonardo DaVinci and one of his most famous paintings The Mona Lisa!

We are also working on a manners lapbook that I created last week.  I plan on posting more about this in a separate blog update.

Kayley got a Bug Drawing Instruction book at the library and she had fun drawing a dragonfly!

We also started using Math-U-See this week...and I'm not fond of it yet.  If we can ever get over the part where, the pieces are "just like legos" we can move forward.  Lol!  We are working on place value.  I must admit that MUS seems to be making Math more complicated than necessary.  We are going to give it a couple more weeks though before we decide if it is not working...  (long story).

Pre-preschool:  We read Jesse Bear, What will you Wear from our Before Five in a Row Book, and we learned about our eyes in our Complete Resource Book for Toddlers & Twos.

Maggie also had fun "sweeping" the floor with her little dustpan and throwing it in the trash.

Workbox Wednesday - Link up

Here is what is in our Summer school workboxes today!

For Kayley's Summer K5 to 1st we will be working on:

Bible 1: Finishing up the Tower of Babel & still
studying our operational definition of obedience
Reading: BOB books and The Cow Laid and Egg
Handwriting:  BJU K5
Math:  Skip counting
Science:  Pocket Babies and Nature Journal
We are also working on memorizing
Mommy's cell phone number and our address.
(Just in case!  You never know)

For Maggies Pre-Preschool workbox we will be matching ark animals in our basic file folder game, playing with counting bears and counting cookies, practicing sticking our stickers onto paper, our textured flashcards, and she LOVES to look at magazines so she will have fun flipping through an older copy of The Friend.

That's about it!  We have a busy July still up ahead.  Elders for dinner, a training webinar for Mommy, a practice run making a "whoopie pie cake" for Kayley's birthday party, actually making "whoopie pie cake(s)?" for Kayley's birthday party, putting together goodie bags for Kayley's birthday party, Kayleys actual birthday party, Church, Kayley's actual birthday, Daddy's church meeting (on Kayley's birthday - I'm not sure how that is going to play out yet), Mommy's church meeting, Mommy's birthday, 2 days of Zoo School, a friends baby shower (at which I volunteered to make homemade ice cream!), another of Kayley's little girlfriend's birthday party and shopping for said events round out July!
Whew!  I'm tired just thinking about it!
Even though we are not 'technically' taking summer off from homeschooling, it has been really challenging to school through the summer when everybody else is off!  We are overwhelmed by invites to BBQs, birthday parties, and other activities.   Which is totally fun, but definitely keeps us off our usual, daily, activities.  Oh, and it has just been so hot!  Blah!

The plan is to start school August 1st.
We need to get back into a routine!
I'm worn out!  :)
