Maggie's ABC Song

The other day I was minding my own business when I heard something that sounded like the ABC song...only maybe in Japanese.  LOL.  Anyway, I discovered that Maggie knew the ABC song.  With a little help from Kayley she knows it really well!

Amazing Science - TOS Review

I know I've mentioned in the past that Science is one of our favorite subjects but ends up being the subject that is the least planned.  It has been so great that so many of the wonderful review products we've been receiving through the TOS Crew have been science related!  Thanks to we had a chance to review a great product called Amazing Science!

What is Amazing Science?
We reviewed Amazing Science DVD set volume 1.  Two disks make science experiments easy, fun and understandable!  In the DVDs you learn about electricity, magnetism, heat, pressure, surface tension, buoyancy, and much more.  Before each demonstration you are given a complete materials list that incorporates many items that you would find at home!  The experiments are recorded from several angles so you can easily see what happens plus each concept is thoroughly explained so you can actually understand the science behind every experiment!

Demonstrated by a real Rocket Scientist, Jason Gibson, each disk includes several experiments that are amazing to watch.  Jason has earned advanced degrees in Engineering and Physics, worked for NASA and has a passion for teaching Science and Math.  Take a look at what the disks include!
Amazing Science currently retails for 19.95 and can be purchased HERE.

Now, for something that will make you go awwwww!   After watching the science videos Kayley decided that she wanted to make her own science videos enjoy!  (Please note - the "why's" of the science are not technically accurate but she is so cute anyway!
I had to hold in giggles during filming).

She is so proud of herself!

Kids Playing Together = Refreshing!

My girls are getting great about playing together.  In the beginning it wasn't so lovely.  The girls would spend most of their time shrieking, "Don't touch that!" "Mine" "No!" "Stop It" get the idea.  But suddenly Kayley has decided to step up into the big sister roll and often I hear things now  (from Maggie) like "Kayley help you?" (She mean's help me...)  It's so cute.  Kayley has started giving Maggie horsey rides, which has both girls in fits of giggles and a few days ago when Maggie stubbed her toe Kayley fetched her a little snack bag with an ice cube in it to hold on her owie until it felt better...

About a week ago I got onto Maggie for something (I don't recall but it was minor and didn't require a time-out) and Maggie was sad and she cried and immediately went to Kayley and tattled on me.  I couldn't understand what she was saying it sounded something like "Waah sniff Mama..whine wah...Kayley...waaah."  Kayley of course was delighted that they could bond together over how rough it is having me for a mother...   LOL.
My girls are pretty darn cute.  I am a lucky Mama.

TruthQuest History - TOS Review

We are big Charlotte Mason fans here and we are just discovering the joys of learning through literature and unit studies!  Reading aloud has brought our family closer together and my girls both love cramming into our "comfy cozy spot" to enjoy reading.  One great way to learn history and read stories with your kiddos is by using TruthQuest History!
About TruthQuest HistoryTruthQuest History is a deep and rich literature-based history study…but with a difference. You will not learn the story of mankind; you will learn the lovestory of mankind. You will not focus on the rise and fall of human civilizations; you will focus on the arrow-straight line of God's unchanging existence, power, love, truth, and plan for civilization. You will not simply 'meet the culture' or 'get the facts;' you will probe the truths of history so deeply that your students will be equipped to change their world!

TruthQuest History for Young Students Vol. 1  (recommended for grades 1 through 5) covers exploration through 1800 and is SO simple and flexible to use.  You read aloud together the commentary for each section, then enjoy reading from the recommended book list.  Read what you want, for as long as you want, then move on to the next topic -- whenever you want.   Audio options are also provided for most sections as well as recommended movies.  While there are a handful of books that would be considered "spine" resources that would be beneficial to own, the majority of the books could be found at your local library.   This product, while recommended for grades 1-5 could easily be used with older kids as well!  Even I really enjoy pictures books and I am WAY past the 5th grade!

My thoughts about TruthQuest:  When I first viewed TruthQuest history I felt immediately overwhelmed by the sheer amount of verbage on each page.  Don't be fooled.  It is actually simple to use.  It is a LOT of reading, which is great for a family like ours where we LOVE reading.  There is not a lot of writing or worksheet activities but TruthQuest does offer supplemental materials on their website.  Check some of them out HERE.  Also, I live relatively rural and our library didn't have many of the materials which was a bit frustrating.  Anyone who lives in a decent size town probably won't have this issue.

TruthQuest History for Young Students Vol. 1 is offered as either a PDF or Print book.
PDF retails for $19.95.
Print retails for $24.95

AIMS - What On Earth? TOS Review

Science is, by far, our most favorite subject in our homeschool.  Unfortunately it is often the most, least-planned, subject as well.  Last year we flew by the seat of our pants...and we ended up doing a lot of "nature study."  (Or in other words - we played outside...)  Not that Nature Studies are bad, in fact, I believe they are GREAT!  But, when several members of the TOS Crew were given AIMS - What on Earth to try, lets just say we had a great time doing something new!

Who is AIMS?
As a non-profit foundation, AIMS (Activities Integrating Math and Science) is motivated by a passion for teaching and learning...
In 1981, 80 elementary and middle school teachers who shared the dream of giving students a strong hands-on foundation in math and science came together at Fresno Pacific and wrote the first AIMS’ activity books. Teachers loved them! Students learned more, learned in greater depth, and enjoyed learning. The word spread, and soon teachers across the nation were using AIMS to engage their students in hands-on learning.

AIMS: What on Earth introduces Kinder through 1st graders to the science of all things Earth including weather, sun, moon, water, rocks, dirt, volcanoes, earthquakes and so much more!   Each topic includes a comprehensive teacher page with learning goals, materials list, background information, procedures, questions and solutions.  While this is written for the classroom (and includes management tips) it was easily adaptable for the homeschool family.  30 guided activities make science fun and easy!

Since we were spending the month of March learning about the weather, we did all the experiments that have to do with the sun, moon, and temperature.  We experimented with various items to determine what would melt in the hot sun and what would not....

We also learned about the characteristics of the sun and how to protect ourselves from the sun's harmful effects.   We also enjoyed drawing pictures of the night sky and assembling some cute little books (all printable materials are provided on the CD).
We had a great time with AIMS and will continue to use it for science until we are done! Check out their website for a LOT of other great materials for all ages!

This 137 page book comes with a CD that offers printable student pages.
(You can also purchase this as a downloadable pdf).

AIMS:  What on Earth retails $21.95 and can be purchased HERE.

The 5 Love Languages of Children - giveaway!

To be their best, children need to feel loved. But if you and your child speak different love languages, your affection might get lost in translation, affecting the child’s attitude, behavior, and development. Dr. Gary Chapman’s groundbreaking Five Love Languages series has helped millions of couples communicate love more clearly, and Dr. Ross Campbell M.D. has applied the innovative system to children as well. The 5 Love Languages of Children gives practical suggestions for learning how your children interpret love and creating a sense of security in which they can thrive.

Many of you might be familiar with The Five Love Languages by Gary Chapman. I read this
book early in my marriage after a recommendation from a friend. The book was eye-opening!
I learned how to recognize what MY love language was, what my new husband's love language
was, how to express love to him in HIS love language and how to recognize if our "love tanks"
were full or empty.

Now Gary Chapman is offering the same insight into our children. Our children are smaller
versions of us and have the same 5 Love Languages:
1. Physical Touch
2. Words of Affirmation
3. Quality Time
4. Gifts
5. Acts of Service

When you can recognize your child's primary love language, you can speak to them in ways that
they will understand. Through hugs, through kudo's or just by spending time one-on-one with

In this book you are offered an opportunity to evaluate your relationship with your kiddos and
find the way that you can love them best. Likewise, Chapman challenges the reader to consider
(of course eliminating the possibility of a physical problem) that many discipline problems could
be avoided all together if we kept our child's love tank full.

A recommended read by a great author!  I have loved every book I've read by Dr. Chapman (this is my 4th).  Hubby and I will be reading this together and I'm excited to try this out on my 5 year old!

I am also able to give away a copy!  If you are interested, please leave a comment below!  Winner will be drawn by on April 15th at 12pm CST.  For an additional entry follow me via GFC and leave a separate comment telling me you have done so.

Monday Misc.

It has been a while since I updated any normal to play catch up, enjoy these misc. pictures...  Above - we went to the big traveling Dino exhibit at the Convention Center.   We learned a lot about Dinosaurs and had a bit of fun.

We've also had a great time playing outside and getting nice and dirty.

We went to the Circus where we saw these weird dancing people.
I think they might've been Oompa-Loompa's.

Thanks to Gwen and Kay for keeping us company at the Circus!

Horsey-rides with Kayley...

I looked out my window a few days ago and saw this in our tree.  It looks an awful lot like a snake, but turned out to be a lizard.  Whew!

Amazing Animals by Design - TOS Review

Why does the giraffe have a tall neck?
Why do elephants have long trunks?
But, why does a zebra have stripes??

I bet your kids have asked you similar question before too!  Sometimes, questions from my 5 year old can leave me feeling like I have no clue about the world around me.  These questions, and more, are answered Debra Haagan's book, Amazing Animals by Design.   Debra shares how all animals are designed by God with unique qualities and characteristics.

In the story, John and Sarah visit the zoo with their parents where all of their questions about God's design for the animals are answered.  This colorful story provides simple way to introduce young children to the concept of intelligent design and offers insight into the "why" of animals.
A perfect companion book to go with a trip to the zoo and a study of animals especially for elementary ages (and maybe even older!).  My daughter loved this story so much that as soon as we came to the end, she asked to read it again!
