Mark Twain's Hannibal

We enjoyed a fun field trip to Hannibal to learn more about Mark Twain!

Hey Tom!  Whitewash that fence!

Mark Twains birthplace...

I think Kayley is going to crash her steamboat into a car!

Quick!  Blow the horn!!

Can't leave Hannibal without visiting the Mark Twain Dinette and getting a world famous Maid-Rite loose meat sandwich!  Yum!

We stumbled upon the cutest train museum too where everything was very hands-on!  The best 4$ I ever spent!

We finished out our visit with some good old-fashioned Huckleberry Ice Cream!

A Weekend in Nauvoo

We decided that we needed to take off on a fun family weekend so we headed out to Nauvoo, IL to see some church history sites and do some shopping!  We had a blast!  We stayed at the Woodruff which gave us a fantastic view of the temple and easy walking to shopping.  Here are just a few fun pictures from our busy day!

Up close and personal with a sunstone.

A ride behind oxen!  Very cool!

Making Rope!

Maggie teaching a Relief Society lesson upstairs in the Red Brick Store.

A yoke is quite heavy, even with empty buckets.

Discovering the printing process in the newspaper office.

How to make bricks!

And guns!

You are never lost when you can see the temple.

Gorgeous sunset over the river.

George Washington Carver National Monument {Field Trip!}

We have been learning a bit about Jim Crow laws and what life was life for African-Americans in the early 1900s and we had a great time learning about an amazing man - George Washington Carver.  He was born really close to here in the little town of Diamond, MO.  We enjoyed paying a visit to the National Monument in his honor, seeing fascinating creatures, getting attacked by caterpillars and learning about the million different things you can do with Peanuts and Sweet Potatoes!  (Just Think -- everything from eating to shoe polish!)

No trip to a National Monument would be complete without the girls earning their Junior Ranger Badge and, as an added bonus, this was the last necessary stop to earning their Junior Civil War historian badge!

Where oh where have we been?  3 weeks ago we bought a new (to us) mini van.  We are pretty excited since our old van was pushing 200,000 miles!  Our celebration was short however when we received word that my last remaining grandpa had passed away.  Things quickly changed as my family arrived for his funeral (which always turn into glorious family reunions don't they?)  Things were a bit harder this time.  It was hard to go through his things and find things of Grandma's too tucked here and there.  He will be missed greatly.

 Mixed blessings...
while Grandma and Papa were here we enjoyed
some random, fun moments like:

Camper shopping...

Eating 100 shrimp...

Catching an exhausted hummingbird who was trapped in the garage.  He sat in my hand for a good 15 minutes, waited patiently while I picked nasty cobwebs off of him and dozed until he had the strength to fly away...
We worked and worked and worked in my Grandpa's yard so the kids could come out...then in my yard pushing back our tree line...  I got covered in bites but thankfully no poison ivy or sumac rashes!  Oh thank you thank you dad for running that burly chainsaw!

After Grandma and Papa went home we spend a day with my bestie learning how to can apples!  Very much appreciated and what fun!

The girls peeled apples...

Kayla washed dishes...

We ended up with applesauce, apple pie filling, apple jam and apple butter!  YUM!

I reciprocated by spending a day canning with Christina although I'm sure I was not much help!  I pretty much peeled apples and kept her company.

Looking forward to a short settling down over the next couple of weeks before things REALLY ramp up again and we make a day trip to St. Louis for Maggie's doctor visit, then a short trip to Texas to pick up Grandma and meet my new nephew, we enjoy Grandma's visit for a couple of weeks, then go to DisneyWorld, then back in time for Christmas!
