The Heart of a Vicar {Book Review & Giveaway}

Oh my!  I have reviewed several books by Sarah M. Eden in the past and she quickly became one of my favorite authors!  She has an amazing series of books following the life and loves of the Jonquil brothers.  This next book in the series doesn't disappoint!  In fact, I remember reading about "Holy Harry" in a few other books and I was so excited to see him finally get a story all his own.  Let me share more about it!

Sarah Sarvol fell in love with a young, daring, and dashing Harold Jonquil.  He seemed to return her sentiments but decided that marriage to Sarah just wouldn't work leaving her confused and bereft.  After going their separate ways he is shocked to find, a few years later, that Sarah has returned from living in America and that she is still unmarried.  Harold has now achieved his dream of becoming a Vicar but he is struggling spiritually and feels disconnected with the community...As his path continues to cross with Sarah, she points out his inadequacies and offers him advice.  Of course, who wants advice from a woman on how to be a good vicar?  But, when she insists to him that SHE would be a better vicar than he, well...what is a guy to do but stand back and watch.  Sarah proves her point as she charms the community as well as Harry.  

Do you think they could find it in their hearts to try to make a go at a relationship again?

The Heart of a Vicar is #7 in the list of Jonquil Brothers series but you do NOT have to read the others first to enjoy this book.  However, I will say that as soon as I read this one, I immediately requested the first 6 from the library!  You will want to know more about the rest of the Jonquils!

Living the Parables {Book Review & Giveaway}

I am thrilled to be a part of Covenant Communication's Blog Tour and Giveaway for this fantastic new book by Hank Smith and co-author Kathryn Jenkins called Living the Parables - Applying Christ's Teaching to our Lives!  

This book is quite a treasure.  Smith & Jenkins kick off this fantastic read by describing the four Gospels of the New Testament and offering insight behind the author of each one.  (Matthew, Mark, Luke & John)  They continue by pleading the case for why we should study the New Testament as a whole since, when we do, it sheds new light on each parable and puts each in an understandable context.  The authors then introduce the two types of parables (I had no idea there were two!) and how the Savior used each type to bring understanding and clarity to the hearer.  

If you are anything like me, then you too have always believed that Jesus spoke in parables to make complex things easier for his audience to digest.  By using simple stories He could teach gospel principles in a way that everyone could understand.  But, the authors go on to share with us that this is a common misconception and not necessarily accurate.  Referring to parables as "unequaled in history" and "a lot deeper than they appear," the authors walk you through the well-known, and many lesser-known, parables found in the New Testament.  Sharing with you how to understand the parable, interpret the parable and then apply its teachings in your life you will put not be able to put this book down.

Ashes on the Moor {Proper Romance}

I just adore every Proper Romance that Shadow Mountain has published!  And, I have really enjoyed author Sarah M. Eden...  I tend to start reading her book and then just can't put it down.  I'm excited to share that her newest book is no exception!   

Ashes on the Moor is another just-can't-put-it-down read!

In Ashes on the Moor, Evangeline Blake and her sister are all that remains of their strong, loving family.  As her aunt and uncle arrive to charge of the girls they discover, to their horror, that her sister will be sent to live with their domineering and angry grandfather, while Evangeline must earn her own way by becoming a school teacher in the impoverished town.  

Devastated at being separated from her sister, hurt by being thrown into the working class, Evangeline arrives at the town school discovering that the building is completely inhabitable.  Having been raised as a genteel lady, Evangeline is anxious and overwhelmed.  She doesn't have the first idea how to cook.  She doesn't have any food to cook.  She can't fix the things wrong with the building.  Not that it mattered, she has no tools.  She has no cleaning supplies.  Not even a bed to sleep on...or blankets to cover herself.

  But she MUST succeed.  

To succeed brings the hope that she can bring her sister there to live with her.

Not giving in to defeat, Evangeline turns to the one person who can help her:  Grumpy and quiet Dermot McCormick.  Even though he seems terribly inconvenienced by helping her...help her he does and very slowly a tentative friendship begins to grow.  Evangeline's heart is tugged by Dermot's quiet little boy and she is anxious to help him...  If only she knew how.  

I can't tell you much more without starting to give away spoilers, so you will just have to read the book to find out what happens to Evangeline and Dermot!

Check Me Out {Book Review}

Assistant Librarian, Greta, absolutely loves everything about her job.  She loves books, she loves people, she loves the library.  One day, in the poetry section, she meets Mac.  He is everything that she loves about books...he's handsome, smart, and well-read.  After interrogating her bestie, Will Marshall, she learns that Will has sent this handsome dude to the library, just for her!  Could it be love at first sight?  Maybe.  He seems like the perfect guy as he begins to woo her and shower her with affection.  As they get to know each other, mostly through text messaging, she begins to wonder why he seems so different in text that he does in person.

When the library starts running into trouble with money, Greta decides to do everything she can to keep the library from becoming obsolete.  Enlisting the help of her bestie Will, she realizes that it has always been Will who is there for her.  Will who jumps to her aid.  Will who she turns to for advice... Maybe this Mac guy isn't all he's cracked up to be?

Much of the conversation in this book takes place as text messages.  How apropos in todays world where I think more and more people are getting to know each other through social media and texting!  I thoroughly enjoyed this quick and quirky read!

Lies Jane Austen Told Me {Book Review}

Ever since Emma read Pride and Prejudice, she's been in love with Mr. Darcy and has regarded Jane Austen as the expert on all things romantic. So naturally when Emma falls for Blake Hampton and he invites her home to meet his parents, she is positive an engagement is in her future. After all, Blake is a single man in possession of a good fortune, and thus must be in want of a wife.

I have enjoyed every single Proper Romance put out so far by Shadow Mountain Publishing!  This excellent novel, Lies Jane Austen Told Me by Julie Wright is no exception!  Our heroine Emma adores Jane Austen and is looking for the kind of romance that a girl can find in a novel like Pride & Prejudice.  She has been dating a handsome fellow named Blake for a while and when he invites her home for the weekend Emma is sure something is up his sleeve.  Excited at the prospect of meeting his parents, Emma is convinced that this is the weekend that Blake will propose.  After all, surely a man is on the verge of a proposal when he takes home is lady love to meet his parents!    Right?

To Emma's shock when she arrives at Blake's home she discovers that his parents are away for the weekend and even worse, she learns that a proposal hadn't even crossed his mind...and probably wouldn't.  Going home to lick her wounds and drown her sorrows by watching Pride & Prejudice, Emma steels herself and returns to work the next morning only to find that her boss has hired a consultant who is none other than Blake's younger brother Lucas!  Could things be any worse?  Surprisingly, Lucas is many things that Blake is not.  Selfless, caring, thoughtful, cares for the poor...  Emma is determined NOT to fall in love with him...  But then things are always complicated in love with Jane Austen...  

I loved this modern day spin on a regency novel!  It had all the feels of a historical romance in the modern day.  I had a tough time putting this one down!  I laughed in a few places and sniffled in another.  Emma is a perfect spunky heroine for this book!

Even This {Book Review}

I have really enjoyed every book I have read by Emily Belle Freeman.  She has written some amazing  devotional books that I love reading again and again, especially during the holidays.  A few of our favorites are: A Christ-Centered Home, A Christ-Centered Easter, and A Christ-Centered Christmas.  They have been fantastic and I have used the Christmas book 2 years in a row now for planning my Christmas lesson in Relief Society!  So, I was excited to get another Emily Belle Freeman book to review called Even This: Getting to the Place Where You Can Trust God With Anything...

Even This invites readers to make room for daily personal experiences with God. From the very first page readers will walk down a spiritual path meant to remind each of us that God will meet us in the unexpected, bringing His goodness, giving us cause to trust, reminding us of His capacity. Filled with deeply personal stories about holding onto belief, daring to trust, and longing for understanding, Even This chronicles one woman's quest to find God in the everyday moments-with one of the most powerful experiences taking place as she searches for sea shells while walking on the beach-and provides many opportunities for individual introspection. -Yes, God is good and He can be trusted, - Freeman concludes, -and it is the daily discovery of these truths that has the potential to become the greatest journey of a life and lead us closer to Him.-

In Even This, Emily Belle Freeman shares stories her time as a newlyweds when she and her husband  discovered that he had a large, fast growing, brain tumor.  Hospitals, biopsies, surgeries...  It was a time where she felt terrified and prayed fervently to God...  But, through her prayers, she heard nothing.  She felt completely abandoned by God and the feelings of desperation that stemmed from her unanswered prayers left her faith shaken.  She wondered, in anguish, "Where is God" in her time of trial?  Where is He when bad things are happening to good people?  This book is filled with personal stories and inspiring messages that answer this big question.

This book also answers the question of how you can get to the place where you can trust God with anything...even your worst trials.  This book is also a bit different than most of Freeman's books and does not have the hymns, recommended scriptures to read, and a challenge to consider.  I have come to love the format of her previous books that I anticipated this to be similar and was a little disappointed.  What she does have is what she calls "The Reflecting Place" throughout the book and while not a devotional or challenge per se, it does give you some insight into how she conquered her fears and gathered strength to face her weaknesses.  It includes scriptures that helped her through and a mantra to help you focus on your journey.  It still gives you points to ponder and a personal challenge to focus on, which is something I have come to love about Freeman's books.  

Even This would make a great Christmas gift or just an anytime gift, especially for someone who is struggling with one of life's biggest questions: Where is God in my times of trials?

Compassionate Soldier {Book Review}

Compassionate Soldier illuminates some of the most fascinating and yet largely unknown stories of men and women whose humanity led them to perform courageous acts of mercy and compassion amid the chaos and carnage of war. Arranged by war from the American Revolution to the Iraq War and global in perspective, it features extraordinary stories of grace under fire from valiant soldiers and noncombatants who rose above the inhumanity of lethal conflict and chose compassion, even knowing their actions could put their lives and liberty at risk.

Let me start by saying, I am NOT the kind of person who is interested in war stories, battles, soldiers, etc.  My family will vouch for me when I share that I have always found "war stories" and even air shows to be a little boring.  I nearly turned down the opportunity to review this book, but I'm glad that I went for it!  It was very different than what I expected and what an interesting read this was!  Compassionate Soldier, the Remarkable True Stories of Mercy, Heroism, and Honor from the Battlefield by Jerry Borrowman, focused in on the true stories of generosity and mercy that was demonstrated in the midst of war by brave men and women when it was unexpected, definitely not required, and in many cases, dangerous!  

Each chapter presents a biography of an individual who exhibited compassion when faced with the horror of the battlefield.  From the famous George Washington & Captain Ferguson in the Revolutionary War to the relatively unknown Shawn McKinnon in the conflicts in Iraq, each person exemplifies the characteristics of a TRUE hero!
Each person is truly an inspiration!

Compassionate Soldier was a fantastic read!  It will be such an asset to our homeschool this year!  I plan to save this book and visit it often in our history studies!  It is incredible to find such stories of beauty in the midst of something awful...

An Unseen Angel {Book Review}

On December 14, 2012, a young man by the name of Adam Lanza walked into Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut and opened fire on two classrooms full of first graders.   The victims numbered 27.  Eight little boys, 12 little girls, 6 women who worked in the school and Adam Lanza, who turned the gun on himself in the end.  Among the dead was a beautiful 6-year-old girl named Emilie Parker.  This is her story.

As the mother of one of the children who died at Sandy Hook school in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012, Alissa Parker had her world shattered by a mass murderer's rampage. She was left to make sense of her daughter's life and death and to rebuild, seeking a deeply spiritual path to carry on with her life and find new meaning and purpose.

As a co-founder of SafeandSoundSchools.org, a touring national advocacy group that helps people take action to make schools safer, Alissa has talked to hundreds of parents around the country about her ordeal and how she was able to endure the unspeakable horror of Sandy Hook.

This is the first book about the school-shooting tragedies with a focus on faith and spirituality. As we learn Alissa's story, we are introduced to a special little girl who was wise beyond her years and whose lessons about life and the transcendent power of love continued even after she had passed away."

I just don't even know how to write a review about a book like this.  My throat swells and my eyes fill each time I revisit Alissa's story.   The day that Alissa lost her sweet daughter was a day like any other.  In fact, she was shopping when word reached her that there had been a shooting at school.  Fighting panic, Alissa made her way to the school where she was shuffled to a room with the other parents to wait to pick up their children.  Hours later, she would learn that Emilie would not be getting picked up that day...nor would any of her classmates.  They had all been killed by gunshot wounds.

 How does one move forward after something this tragic and unfair?  The only thing Alissa could do, with her husband Robbie, was pray.  They desperately needed God's guidance and reassurance that everything was going to be ok.  He blessed them with a strong sense of peace and made it possible for the family to put one foot in front of the other.

While her grief made it nearly impossible to function, Alissa still had to learn to live again.   She had to learn that there are some things that even a Mom cannot protect their children from.  She had to overcome the guilt that she couldn't save her daughter...and that she wasn't there to protect her.  She had to learn how to function in day to day living.  How to engage with her other children.  She had to learn how to find a new normal.

This book is a whole-box-of-tissues read.  But, it's not all tragedy.  Alissa & Emilie give you triumph in the face of great odds and demonstrates that love really does conquer all.

The Lady of the Lakes {A Historical Proper Romance Book Review}

Walter Scott has three passions: Scotland, poetry, and Mina Stuart. Though she is young and they are from different stations in society, Walter is certain their love is meant to be. For years, he has courted her through love letters. She is the sunshine of his soul.  

Though Mina shares Walter’s love of literature and passionate temperament, it’s hard for her to know if she truly loves him or if she has only been dazzled by his flattery. When I was given a chance to review this book I have to admit, I had to look up to find out exactly who Sir Walter Scott was!  His name was familiar but I couldn't remember what literary accomplishments he was famous for.  I felt a little silly when I discovered that he was the gentleman who wrote the famous novel Ivanhoe and Rob Roy, among many other well-known works.  What's even worse is I had a copy of Ivanhoe sitting near my bedside...  No wonder I was familiar with his name!  Unlike Sir Walter Scott's Ivanhoe, which for me is a major challenge to read, The Lady of the Lakes by Josi S. Kilpack that shares of the life of Sir Walter Scott is a pleasure that I couldn't put down!

Walter Scott is in love with a young lady of means, Mina Stuart.  Even though they come from different stations in society, he is sure that they will one day marry (for she shares the same passions for prose as he and has expressed her affection on several occasions).  Even though life will be difficult Walter knows that facing the future together with Mina will bring him joy for all his days...  For Mina, she flushes with delight under the romantic attention of Walter, but the pressures of family and society force her to consider courtship with William Forbes, a man who is of her station, admittedly she doesn't find the prospect at all unappealing.  William is also handsome and kind, and he would be able to support the lifestyle to which she was accustomed.  Torn between the two gentleman, Mina must make a decision.

Meanwhile, Charlotte Carpenter has given up on ever finding true love and marrying.  Her past is filled with shame and scandal, and at the ripe, old age of twenty-six she is considered, by all standards, an old maid.  Making a bold resolution, she convinces her guardian to let her move out on her own.  Learning how to manage her own accounts, Charlotte is determined to no longer be a burden on anyone.  Her heart still yearns for love...and a family of her very own...when she meets Walter she finds someone who challenges her intellectually and makes her laugh.  Could he be the one?

Charlie the Tramp {Review & Giveaway!}

Think back...maybe way back...and tell me, do you remember Frances?  I don't remember a ton about the adorable little badger, but I do remember her desperately liking bread and jam, and I remember when she had a new baby sister and when she ended up running away.  (It didn't work out that great.)  There were several Frances books and each one was cuter than the last.  I have since checked them all out from the library for MY kids to enjoy.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered that Russell and Lillian Hoban were the authors of a cute critter other than Frances!  Meet Charlie, an adorable little beaver who decides that, instead of being a beaver, he wants to be a "tramp" when he grow up.

Charlie decides that being a beaver is just way too much work...he doesn't want to practice swimming, diving and holding his breath under water.  He doesn't want to keep his teeth sharp.  As tramp he can carry a little bundle with a stick, sleep outside when the weather is nice, and do little odd jobs for a meal...  Well, of course his parents are concerned, because surely Charlie doesn't want to be a tramp?  But, he does, so with his parents blessing, Charlie goes off a-tramping.

I won't tell you about his adventures as a tramp or what he decides to do...you'll just have to read the book to find out!  It is a cute story with a happy ending.

Originally published in 1966, Charlie the Tramp is in it's 50th Anniversary hardcover edition.  As a Charlotte Mason homeschooler I have to say that this book fits the bill as a non-twaddly, early reader.  Just perfect for reading aloud or the emerging readers in your family!

The Sheriffs of Savage Wells by Sarah M. Eden {A Proper Romance Book Review}

A Proper Romance by Shadow Mountain has struck again!  I have adored every single book I have read so far and once again, A Proper Romance did not disappoint!  A bonus, Sarah M. Eden is one of my favorite authors.  You can read a couple of my reviews of her other books here.  In this new book we get a feisty heroine, Paisley Bell, who is determined to be the new Sheriff of Savage Wells, Wyoming.

The small town of Savage Wells is barely big enough for the people who call it home; it certainly isn’t big enough for more than one sheriff. 

Yet when famed lawman Cade O’Brien rides into town, he finds he’s not the only man ready to take on the job. What’s more, one of his competitors is a woman. 

Paisley Bell loves her town and the eccentric people in it. She’s been the acting sheriff for months and isn’t too keen on relinquishing the job to anyone else. Not only does she love the work, but she also needs the income to take care of her ailing father. 

It’s a true battle of the sexes, and sparks fly between the two as Cade and Paisley banter and boast, neither one ready to acknowledge the attraction they have for each other. But when Paisley’s former beau shows up, along with a band of bank robbers, Savage Wells is suddenly faced with the kind of peril that only a sheriff can manage. Paisley Bell is something else.  She spent several months covering for an inept and distracted sheriff, even going so far as to bringing in a notorious gang of outlaws (of which she got no credit).  When the town of Savage Wells decides to hire a new sheriff, Paisley throws her name in the pool of candidates, much to the chagrin of Cade O'Brien, well-known law man and certain shoo-in for the position.  What Cade doesn't know is that Paisley is not going to give up easily and he quickly discovers that she can best him at many of his own skills.  She is quick, witty, a sharp-shooter, and level-headed in dangerous situations.  The more they compete with each other to try to win the title of sheriff, the more they begin to respect one another, and heaven-forbid...maybe even admire one another?  Yes!  :)

I rarely read books where the heroine is a feisty "I can do it myself type."  I admit to being more of a "Cinderella story" type person, but I couldn't put this book down!  For all of Paisley's bluster, she is tender and softhearted and I grew so fond of her character.  The book left me hanging a little in the end...maybe it is to keep us wondering until a 2nd book comes out?  After all, I'm very worried about Dr. Gideon MacNamara.  I mean, hello!  He's handsome...and single...and so nice!

Character in Action {Character Concepts}

Way back in 2011 I was given the opportunity to attend my very first homeschool conference.  Our keynote speakers were a husband and wife team representing a company called Character Concepts.  Rick & Marilyn Boyer both spoke on several different topics, many of which, even 5 years later are still some of my favorite conference talks of all time.

At the time I was still struggling with the "should I" homeschool question.  My biggest fear being that my daughter would not listen to me like she does for others...or that we would grow too frustrated with each other to enjoy each others company.  Marilyn Boyer put my fears to rest in a series of talks at conference (I bought all the Boyer CDs they had!) pointing out that homeschooling is more than just academics, it is a matter of the heart.

Wow!  I needed to know more!  It was though a great blessing from the Boyers that I was given a Character Concepts for Preschoolers set to review setting us on a path of learning good character and teaching and training your children to be the kind of people you WANT to be around all the time.  After completing this I purchased Character Trails and then Kids of Character and then Proverbs People... and the rest is history.  Believe it or not I STILL use all of these products frequently in my homeschool each year.

At this point I bet you can imagine my excitement then when Marilyn approached me to review one of their newest products called Character in Action.  This book still follows the curious and adventurous Boyer cousins.  (I was squealing over the cover.  Just look at how the cousins have grown!  I love it!)  The Boyer cousins are bigger, wiser and just as sweet as ever!  And in this book they are going to show you just how you can put character in action!

In previous books children learned character qualities like attentiveness, compassion, generosity, and joyfulness.  Sharing lives from famous people from the Bible and sweet stories of the cousins, and famous historical heroes, previous books set you and your child on the path of building good character, but that was only a beginning.

Their newest book, Character in Action invites your family to "take the next step" by literally putting character into action.  Full of practical steps to take, Character in Action teaches your family various ways to reach out and become engaged with those who need our help.  Real-life stories with the cousins demonstrate to children all the ways we interact with others and shows the "why" behind the importance of good behavior.    

Each chapter introduces a "catch phrase" and scripture, a true story, and a section entitled "Taking the Next Step" that gives your children several ideas to put their character into action.  Included at the bottom are suggested scripture stories to further your study of each character quality.

This book is great!  My kids favorite story so far is of cousin Lauren and Mrs. Burks.  Mrs. Burks was a little elderly lady who was a bit lonely but Lauren made a special project out of giving Mrs. Burks a hug whenever they saw each other.  Such a small and simple thing brought great joy to both Mrs. Burks and Lauren.  By her example both of my girls have worked on picking someone each Sunday to hug and make them feel loved and special.

This book is a very welcome addition to my Character Curriculum Library and I think you will enjoy it too.

She Stood for Freedom by Loki Mulholland {Book Review}

She Stood for Freedom by Loki Mulholland, tells the untold story of his mother, Civil Rights heroine Joan Trumpauer Mulholland.  As a white teenager growing up in the deep south, Joan was shocked by the injustice and horrible effects of segregation...  Determined to join the Civil Right Movement, Joan wanted to help put an end to these unfair practices.  Joan attended some of the most famous demonstrations from the time period including the Freedom Rides, Woolworth's lunch counter sit ins, and the the March on Washington.  She even met Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr!  Joan was even the first white woman to attend an all black college and be invited into an all black sorority!  Even though she faced threats and ended up getting arrested she never gave up the belief that segregation was wrong and that she could "make a difference."  Her courage against injustice is an inspiration for us all.

Joan said, "Anyone can make a difference.  It doesn't matter how old or young you are.  Find a problem, get some friends together, and go fix it.  Remember you don't have to change the world...just change your world."

Recommended for ages 8 and up, She Stood for Freedom is a perfect complement to our studies of the Civil Rights Movement.  It is chock full of original pictures and images of historical documents,  including Joan at the Woolworths counter and with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr!  The back pages include an epilogue and timeline of events in Joan's life.  It is easy to read and understand even for the youngest of readers studying this time period.  Even as an adult my understanding of the time period was deepened by witnessing the effect that Joan had on her world.

Beauty and the Clockwork Beast {A Steampunk Proper Romance}

When Lucy Pickett arrives at Blackwell Manor to tend her ailing cousin, Kate, she finds more than she bargained for.  A restless ghost roams the hallways, werewolves have been reported in the area, and vampires lurk across the Scottish border. 

Lord Miles himself is clearly hiding a secret.  He is brash and inhospitable, and does not take kindly to visitors - even one as smart and attractive as Miss Pickett.  He is unsettled by the mysterious deaths of his new wife, Clara, and his sister Marie.  Could Miles himself be to blame for the deaths?   

Working together, Miles and Lucy attempt to restore peace to Blackwell Manor.  but can Lucy solve the mystery of Miles?  Can she love the man - beast and all?

What an awesome opportunity I was given to review Beauty and the Clockwork Beast by Nancy Campbell Allen!  I was pleasantly surprised at what a delight this steampunk romance turned out to be!

So, really, this was my very first time reading something that was classified as "Steampunk."  If you are anything like me, you may be wondering...what exactly is steampunk anyway?  I Googled up a definition for you, which really doesn't do the word justice according to the book, but here:

Steampunk 

1. a genre of science fiction that typically features 

   steam-powered machinery rather than advanced technology.

And this is true...  there were "automatons" or "'tons" doing the work of servants, airships, horseless carriages driven by 'tons, "Tesla stations" to send messages, etc.  All the while this book held onto the dreamy victorian era that this Proper Romance girl adores!  

So, my opinion and definition of steampunk is really more like this:

Steampunk

Where the Victorian era crashes into the future.

According to the book description it is where 

"Jane Eyre meets Beauty and the Beast"

 Let me tell you more about this book....  

Lucy Pickett is a scientist, biologist, herboligist and an amazingly self-reliant lady when she arrives at Blackwell Manor to care for her cousin, Kate, who is mysteriously ill.  As she tries to get to the bottom of Kate's ailment there are whispers and rumors of a curse that afflicts only Blackwell brides...  Like Lord Blackwell's late wife...she only survived for a month in her marriage before she met a tragic end.  A no-nonsense skeptic, Lucy has no time for that until she is confronted by the ghost of Marie herself, Lord Blackwell's sister who was murdered in the gardens.  What is her unfinished business?  Does she have something to say about the curse?  Was she victim to this curse as well? 

As Lucy gets to know the handsome and brooding Lord Blackwell she realizes that he holds a secret...one that could shed light on the mysteries plaguing the residents of the manor.  

Duhm, duhm, DUHM....

So, what did I REALLY think of this book?

First of all, this genre was way out of my comfort zone.  I began reading it with trepidation because I was pretty sure that I was not going to like it.  I mean, vampires? werewolves?  really?  But, I gave it a go....and by page 65 the book grabbed ahold of me and refused to let me go.

Trust me when I tell you this book will pull you in just like all the other amazing proper romances!   I really enjoyed it and I think you will too!

The Christ-Centered Home by Emily Belle Freeman

I have been blessed to read several of Emily Belle Freeman's books in the past.  Her books about Easter and Christmas have been wonderful additions to our home library.  I was excited to see that she had a new book out!  Called The Christ-Centered Home, this book offers readers a 12 step/lesson process that will help you to have a calm, peaceful home that is focused on the Savior.  Each lesson is a single chapter sharing New Testament stories, various scriptures, simple talking-points for discussion, and helpful, challenging ideas to implement these steps in your family.  Did I mention she has a recommendation for treats?  Yum!  The idea is to spend one night a month focusing on each Christ-like attribute, then spending the month continuing to work on developing the habit.  Use it as a family home evening!  It is more than a jumping off point, it offers "conversation, connection and celebration."

For our first month we have enjoyed studying about Love.  The lesson we did together told the story of the 4 men who brought their friend to Christ.  The man suffered greatly with palsy and the 4 friends knew that Christ could heal him.  Unable to get in the door they climbed up onto the roof and lowered him down through the ceiling.  How hard that must have been!  I have never put that much thought into that story, but what amazing friends they were!  How they got a bed-ridden friend on the roof is beyond me...and then they would've had to take the roof tiles off (heavy and hot work) and once they managed to open it up...they then carefully lower their friend through!  Wow!  Those were good, dedicated friends.  And because of their faith, Christ DID heal the man.

How much are you willing to do, to bring your friend to Christ?

To finish up our evening, we discussed ways that we can do likewise.  It really was a great lesson for my kids who are elementary age and the treat of oven-baked smores was a real winner!

I'mpossible! - Jeff Griffin

Wow!  What an opportunity I was given to review this motivational book by Jeff Griffin.  His story begins many years ago when, at the age of 22, he was painting a large barn with a friend.  In one, swift, moment in time, his life was forever changed when he fell over 20 feet from the scaffolding. Landing in what he called "a perfect 10," his L-1 lumbar shattered and T-12 vertebra severely compressed.  After spending several hours receiving x-rays and waiting for the diagnosis, the final blow came when the doctor told him, "You'll neither walk, nor move your legs, again."

Succumbing to self-pity only briefly, Jeff did what many of us would find impossible.  He stopped thinking about only himself, abandoned his self pity-party, and got to work.  "Don't Quit and Stay Positive" became his battle-cry as he worked into a routine of shots, therapy, resting, and doing it all over again.

Fast forward to the present where Jeff is here to share the story of his trials and his subsequent triumph.  Using Mt. Everest has a backdrop Jeff points out that "We all have a handicap or a Mount Everest to climb."  Granted your handicap may be much different than Jeff's or mine.  It could be physical, social or spiritual...a handicap being anything that makes progress or success difficult.    Jeff said,

"Whatever your individual handicap is it can be conquered!  These disabilities can be either debilitating or liberating.  They can hold us back or lift us up.  They can remain our weakness or they can become our strengths.  I hope by sharing my story of big dreams, grave disappointments, and euphoric triumphs it can help in some small way to lift you closer to the light that lifts....Remember, there are no excuses when it comes to success!  You're possible!"

Today Jeff Griffin is a motivational speaker based out of Utah.  While his life didn't turn out perfect, he is perfectly content with how his life turned out.  He turned his trial into his life's work.  His passion is to help people take the steps needed to make change, find success, and live a satisfied and happy life, following 3 fundamental steps:  Desire, Dream and Do.

When asked how his message can help other people, Jeff responded,

"I understand that my message will not resonate with everyone but I do know from experience that when I see or read about someone else who overcomes great odds or challenges It gives me hope. I’m motivated to be better, to do more, and to give more. It shows me that if someone else can do hard things then I too can overcome hard and impossible things. Not only that but that life can be cherished and enjoyed even with hardships and heartache. My message is a raw exposure to my heart and soul."

I really enjoyed reading I'mPossible!  Each chapter is set up with "Mile Markers" at the beginning to help you as you move through your journey and critical thinking challenges at the end that encourage you to DO something before moving into the next mile.  It was hard to put down and I pressed on quickly...anxious to find out what happened to Jeff in the end.  But, toward the end (and I'm not going to spoil it - you should read the book!) I discovered that all happy endings do not look the same and that the end...is only the beginning.

Forever and Forever {A Proper Romance}

I have really been enjoying the Proper Romance line from Shadow Mountain!  If you've followed my blog for very long you have probably read quite a few reviews I have done from this line, each one delightful!  I'm excited to share another great read called Forever and Forever: The Courtship of Henry Longfellow and Fanny Appleton by Josi S. Kilpack.  

It’s 1836, and nineteen-year-old Fanny Appleton, a privileged daughter of a wealthy, upper-class Boston industrialist, is touring Europe with her family. Like many girls of her day, she enjoys the fine clothes, food, and company of the elite social circles. But unlike her peers, Fanny is also drawn to education, literature, and more intellectual pursuits.  Published author and poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is also touring Europe, but under much different circumstances. Recently widowed, he is gathering research for a new publication that he hope will secure his professorship at Harvard College. Befriended by the Appleton family while visiting Switzerland, Henry is introduced to Fanny and sees in her a kindred spirit, a lover of language and literature and high ideals. He is in love. Fanny, however, is uncertain. He is from a much lower social class and is older than she is. How could such a relationship ever thrive? Could a book of Henry’s poetry, personally delivered, persuade Fanny to believe in a love that lasts forever and forever?

I found this book to be so fascinating!   Henry Wadsworth Longfellow was recently widowed when he met Fanny Appleton.  Fanny found Henry to be somewhat dull (he didn't dance!) and he was 10 years her senior so she felt him much too old...Plus, she came from a wealthy family and their social classes didn't encourage anything more than friendship...  But, he was so kind and spent much time with her family.  Their courtship was not terribly romantic, extending over 7 long years, but Henry was patient, persistent, and many of his most famous poems came from a time when he was longing for Fanny's love.  Eventually Fanny comes around and returns Henry's affections.  :)

Josi S. Kilpack went to great lengths in researching the life of Longfellow and Appleton.  The final section of the book offers detailed chapter notes explaining what was fact and what was fiction and a timeline of published works and family happenings.   

I enjoyed Forever and Forever!  You really can't go wrong with any book in the Proper Romance line!
