Easter!

We had a wonderful Easter!
The girls had a great time coloring eggs and getting ready for Sunday...
We did, of course, eat those eggs for lunch and enjoyed very colorful egg salad sandwiches!

Due to lots of rain we had an indoor Easter Egg Hunt...

Happy Easter 2017!

Compassionate Soldier {Book Review}

Compassionate Soldier illuminates some of the most fascinating and yet largely unknown stories of men and women whose humanity led them to perform courageous acts of mercy and compassion amid the chaos and carnage of war. Arranged by war from the American Revolution to the Iraq War and global in perspective, it features extraordinary stories of grace under fire from valiant soldiers and noncombatants who rose above the inhumanity of lethal conflict and chose compassion, even knowing their actions could put their lives and liberty at risk.

Let me start by saying, I am NOT the kind of person who is interested in war stories, battles, soldiers, etc.  My family will vouch for me when I share that I have always found "war stories" and even air shows to be a little boring.  I nearly turned down the opportunity to review this book, but I'm glad that I went for it!  It was very different than what I expected and what an interesting read this was!  Compassionate Soldier, the Remarkable True Stories of Mercy, Heroism, and Honor from the Battlefield by Jerry Borrowman, focused in on the true stories of generosity and mercy that was demonstrated in the midst of war by brave men and women when it was unexpected, definitely not required, and in many cases, dangerous!

Each chapter presents a biography of an individual who exhibited compassion when faced with the horror of the battlefield.  From the famous George Washington & Captain Ferguson in the Revolutionary War to the relatively unknown Shawn McKinnon in the conflicts in Iraq, each person exemplifies the characteristics of a TRUE hero!
Each person is truly an inspiration!

Compassionate Soldier was a fantastic read!  It will be such an asset to our homeschool this year!  I plan to save this book and visit it often in our history studies!  It is incredible to find such stories of beauty in the midst of something awful...

Compassionate Soldier is available in both hardcover and audio book from your favorite retailer!  If you are studying American History or enjoy "war stories" then this book is a must-read!

Disclaimer:  I received Compassionate Soldier free of charge in exchange for an honest review.  All opinions expressed here are my very own.  Thank you for swinging by!

Next Stop! Casey, IL

In April we traveled to Cincinnati for the Midwest Great Homeschool Convention and on our way we made this odd pit stop in the small town of Casey, IL.  What is odd about it is:  it boasts the MOST "largest" things in the world...  For example:

The worlds largest wind chimes.

The worlds largest knitting needles and crochet hook...

The worlds largest wooden shoes...

The worlds largest mailbox...

The view from inside the mailbox...

a birdcage, although it didn't say it was the worlds largest,
it was definitely the largest one I've ever seen...

The worlds largest rocking chair...

 A very big pencil...

And a really big yarn store...Kayley was really thrilled!

And this item is NOT the worlds largest, but it was literally, the FIRST time my girls had EVER seen a payphone...  This is their trying to look "dumbfounded" expressions...  Silly girls!  LOL!

The people of Casey were really kind and we enjoyed our visit!  Check it out if you are ever in the area!  It is a pretty fun stop!

Traveling Through March!

At the end of March my Dad retired from Civil Service with the Navy.  We took the opportunity to enjoy an extended field trip to Virginia where we were excited to tour the Pentagon, meet the Under Secretary of the Navy, and enjoy a very official military retirement ceremony...  None of which I was allowed to take pictures of!~

Bummer I know!  But, here is one picture I am sure you will enjoy:
This is a picture of us trapped in the elevator at Pentagon Mall.  Yes, trapped.  For 30 minutes.  We finally got out after a call to 911 brought several fire trucks and about 8 firemen!

But, hey!  We enjoyed a lot of other things about our trip!
Here are the pictures to prove it!

The view from the Control Tower at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy, National Air and Space Museum.  A very fun and interesting visit.  It is a part of the Smithsonian!

A hidden Mickey!

We also paid a visit to a great restaurant right on the Potomac!  We ate fresh seafood that was awfully good and went out side in the freezing wind to snap a picture!

No visit to VA would be complete without a stop at Mount Vernon!

And of course, a selfie is always required.

We visited the National Mall...

And saw the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington...

We also managed to survive riding the Metro...
That is quite an adventure too!

We really really had a great visit to Virginia!

An Unseen Angel {Book Review}

On December 14, 2012, a young man by the name of Adam Lanza walked into Sandy Hook Elementary in Newtown, Connecticut and opened fire on two classrooms full of first graders.   The victims numbered 27.  Eight little boys, 12 little girls, 6 women who worked in the school and Adam Lanza, who turned the gun on himself in the end.  Among the dead was a beautiful 6-year-old girl named Emilie Parker.  This is her story.

As the mother of one of the children who died at Sandy Hook school in Newtown, Connecticut, in 2012, Alissa Parker had her world shattered by a mass murderer's rampage. She was left to make sense of her daughter's life and death and to rebuild, seeking a deeply spiritual path to carry on with her life and find new meaning and purpose.
As a co-founder of SafeandSoundSchools.org, a touring national advocacy group that helps people take action to make schools safer, Alissa has talked to hundreds of parents around the country about her ordeal and how she was able to endure the unspeakable horror of Sandy Hook.

This is the first book about the school-shooting tragedies with a focus on faith and spirituality. As we learn Alissa's story, we are introduced to a special little girl who was wise beyond her years and whose lessons about life and the transcendent power of love continued even after she had passed away."
I just don't even know how to write a review about a book like this.  My throat swells and my eyes fill each time I revisit Alissa's story.   The day that Alissa lost her sweet daughter was a day like any other.  In fact, she was shopping when word reached her that there had been a shooting at school.  Fighting panic, Alissa made her way to the school where she was shuffled to a room with the other parents to wait to pick up their children.  Hours later, she would learn that Emilie would not be getting picked up that day...nor would any of her classmates.  They had all been killed by gunshot wounds.

How does one move forward after something this tragic and unfair?  The only thing Alissa could do, with her husband Robbie, was pray.  They desperately needed God's guidance and reassurance that everything was going to be ok.  He blessed them with a strong sense of peace and made it possible for the family to put one foot in front of the other.

While her grief made it nearly impossible to function, Alissa still had to learn to live again.   She had to learn that there are some things that even a Mom cannot protect their children from.  She had to overcome the guilt that she couldn't save her daughter...and that she wasn't there to protect her.  She had to learn how to function in day to day living.  How to engage with her other children.  She had to learn how to find a new normal.

This book is a whole-box-of-tissues read.  But, it's not all tragedy.  Alissa & Emilie give you triumph in the face of great odds and demonstrates that love really does conquer all.

You can purchase An Unseen Angel and a big box of tissues from your favorite retailer.
